Welcome, my name is Dr. Jacob Rossmer and I'm a clinical psychologist. I conduct therapy by listening to people talk about their lives, their experiences, their dreams, and their desires. Many people attend therapy because they feel lost, hurt, or lonely; they may be scared or uncertain of their future, looking for a way to understand themselves better, and to attain some degree of clarity in regards to their past.
We often start therapy because we perceive there to a problem in our lives: we don't feel confident, we're struggling at work, we can't seem to be heard or to be seen, we're having problems in our relationships, or we can't even find relationships to begin with. Sometimes these problems are specific and time-sensitive (such as we believe we're on thin ice at work or we just broke up with our significant other); other times, the problems feel more diffuse and chronic (such as feelings of sadness and depression, or feeling like we can't tolerate certain experiences or environments because they stress us out more than we can handle).
As you can see, the therapy process is very unique and individualized to the person. It's a time for you to be selfish in the most productive and meaningful way. Therapy places the focus on you, helping to decipher what's important and how you can work to change things in your life. I have helped many people on their journey through the therapy process, and if what you've just read rings true, please reach out to discuss next steps.
I am a Clinical Psychologist licensed in New York State, and have been offering psychotherapy services since 2005.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University, and taught high school mathematics for three years before returning to school to pursue my passion of working with people clinically. I attended the University of Long Island, CW Post, where I completed a doctorate in psychology, and completed advanced studies in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed treatment, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I completed my internship at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, in Eastern Queens, and received extensive training working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Since that time, I have worked with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds, differing socioeconomic statuses, gender identities and sexual orientations, ages, and presenting concerns.
I have worked as both a clinician and an administrator in different organizations and systems, both in the public sector (city and state of New York), as well as private (through Mt. Sinai hospital). My experience has given me the opportunity to see treatment from different angles, and to gain a better appreciation of the struggles that clients face due to a general lack of services, insurance issues and concerns, and feelings of isolation and loneliness.Â
